Colombia elects first woman mayor of Bogota

Claudia Lopez receives 35.26% of vote in Colombian local elections

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - Claudia Lopez was elected on Sunday as the first woman mayor of the capital Bogota.

The 49-year-old candidate of the center-left Green Alliance party won 35.26% of votes in the local elections. Her main rival Carlos Fernando Galan trails at 32.4%, with 91.75% of the votes counted.

Her campaign focused on decontaminating the Bogota River, construction of the first Bogota metro line, dealing with the migration crisis from Venezuela, improving the city's air quality, and reforestation of the Thomas Van Der Hammen Reserve.

She will take office on Jan.1, 2020.

Lopez studied finance, government and international relations at the Externado University of Colombia. She has a master's degree in Public Administration and Urban Policy from the Colombia University in New York and a PhD in Political Science from the Northwestern University in the U.S.

She was a senator for the Green Alliance and candidate for vice president in the last presidential elections.
