Colombia: Narco groups kill 5 Indigenous people

'We join the pain of communities and families', says President Ivan Duque

ANKARA (AA) - Colombia's President Ivan Duque said five Indigenous people were killed and six injured by narco-trafficking groups in the country's southwest.

Those responsible for the deaths in Cauca province are drug trafficking groups that wanted to maintain business, Duque said on Wednesday in a video statement on Twitter.

"We join the pain of communities and families," he added.

The Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca (CRIC) denounced the murder of indigenous leader, Cristina Bautista, and four volunteer guards of the Tacueyo community.

Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels were once active in Cauca province, where they pushed to expand their territory clashing with indigenous guards.

Colombia and the FARC reached a peace deal in November 2016, ending more than 50 years of conflict between the two sides. Following the demobilization of the leftist rebel group, a political arm of the FARC was established, which is represented in the country’s Congress.
