Countries grieve with Turkey after deadly quake

Magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit Turkey's 3rd largest city on Oct. 30, killing at least 91 people

ANKARA / KHARTOUM / BUDAPEST (AA) - Many countries including Mauritania and Hungary offered on Monday condolences to Turkey over the Oct. 30 devastating earthquake in the Aegean region.

The magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit Izmir, Turkey's third-largest city, killing at least 91 people and leaving nearly 1,000 injured.

Thousands of tents and beds have been supplied to provide temporary shelter as rescue and relief efforts still continue.

Sudan expressed regret on the casualties, condoled with the families of the victims, and wished a "speedy recovery" to the injured.

The northwestern African country of Mauritania also offered condolences, saying it "received with great regret the news of the earthquake that affected the city of Izmir and the victims it left behind.

"The Islamic Republic of Mauritania extends its sincere condolences to the Turkish government and people and to the families of the martyrs," its Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun also offered his condolences to Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

South Korea’s President Moon Jae-in expressed grief, and hoped that wounds "will be healed as soon as possible."

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban prayed for the victims, and wished a quick recovery to the injured.
