COVID-19: Death toll continues to rise in Arab nations

Death toll reaches 432 in Algeria; 337 in Egypt; 7 in Jordan

ANKARA (AA) - Three Arab nations reported new deaths from the novel coronavirus over the last 24 hours, as the region continues to struggle with the pandemic, health authorities said Monday.

In a statement, Egypt's Health Ministry confirmed 20 more fatalities from COVID-19, bringing the death toll to 337. The number of cases rose to 4,782 and the number of recoveries reached 1,236.

In a press conference, Djamel Fourar, the spokesman of the scientific committee for monitoring the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic under the Algerian Ministry of Health, said the number of cases in the country rose to 3,517 as 135 more people tested positive.

The death toll in Algeria climbed to 432 with seven more fatalities, while 1,558 people have recovered.

In Jordan, the country's Health Minister Saad Jaber said the total number of cases in the country rose to 449 with two new COVID-19 cases. A total of 345 people have recovered so far, while seven people have died from coronavirus.

After originating in China last December, COVID-19, the disease caused by a coronavirus, has spread to at least 185 countries and regions across the world. Europe and the US are currently the worst-hit regions.

The pandemic has killed nearly 210,000 people, with total infections exceeding 3 million, while around 886,000 have recovered from the disease, according to figures compiled by the US-based Johns Hopkins University.
