COVID-19: Death toll in Indonesia exceeds 10,000 mark

At least 128 new deaths, over 4,600 new cases recorded in archipelago country over past day, Health Ministry says

JAKARTA (AA) - The death toll in Indonesia from the novel coronavirus surpassed 10,000 mark, as 128 new fatalities were reported in the archipelago country over the past 24 hours, the Health Ministry said.

According to the ministry, the country registered 4,635 new cases of the novel coronavirus, the highest daily spike since the outbreak in the country, raising the nationwide tally to 262,022.

The capital Jakarta reported the highest daily surge with 1,044 cases, taking the local tally to 66,731, it said.

The total number of recoveries reached 191,385, with 3,895 additions over the past day, the ministry added.

- Fatalities rate climbs

The fatality rate in the country is currently at around 3.9%, higher than the global average of 3.4%, according to official data.

The data showed that 41.2% of the patients who died from the virus were over 60 years of age and 39.3% were aged between 46 and 59 years.

Meanwhile, 43.5% of patients who died reportedly had comorbidities such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic heart, kidney and lung disease.
