COVID-19 deaths, cases on rise in Arab countries

Death toll in Algeria reaches 2,640, Palestine records 2,149 new cases and infections in UAE reach 189,866

ISTANBUL (AA) – Algeria, Palestine and the United Arab Emirates announced more coronavirus cases and deaths Thursday as they continued efforts to contain the disease.

Algeria’s Health Ministry said nine people died in the last 24 hours, taking the country’s death toll to 2,640.

The ministry said the virus was detected in 426 more people, taking the total number of infections to 93,933.

Another 389 patients recovered, taking the country’s tally to 62,089.

-Palestine

Palestine's Health Ministry said on its official website that 2,149 people had been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past 24 hours.

The latest cases took the total to 133,186.

Another 30 virus-caused deaths were recorded, taking the country’s death toll to 1,186.

The number of people recovering from the disease rose to 106,840 as 2,027 more patients tested negative as a result of treatment.

-The UAE

The UAE’s Health Ministry said three more people died from COVID-19, 1,321 were infected and 792 had recovered.

The country’s death toll rose to 629 and the number of cases reached 189,866 while a total of 166,541 patients have recovered.

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed over 1.65 million lives in 191 countries and regions since the virus was first detected in Wuhan, China in December last year.

Over 74.7 million cases have been reported worldwide and more than 42.2 million recoveries, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.

While the US, India and Brazil remain the worst-hit countries in terms of the number of cases, Europe is in the grip of a devastating second wave of infections.
