Cyclone Gati destroys 75% of property in 4 Somali towns

Schools, health facilities, water points, gov't offices, about 80% of residential houses were destroyed or damaged

MOGADISHU, Somalia (AA) - Cyclone Gati which made landfall in late September has dissipated but rains from the deadly storm continues to pound different towns, the UN said Tuesday.

"Cyclone Gati has reportedly killed nine people and destroyed almost 4,000 properties belonging to nomadic communities. It also destroyed 886 properties which amounts to more than 75 per cent of all privately-owned properties in Xaafuun, Dardaare, Hurdiye and Karduush," it said.

A damage assessment completion is yet to be finished but the UN warned, "the destruction count is expected to be higher."

Schools, health facilities, water points and government offices and about 80% of residential houses were destroyed or damaged in those areas.

An estimated 7,500 livestock perished in Xaafuun, Karduush and Hurdiye. A total of 120 fishing vessels including eight fishing boats were totally or partially destroyed, and 469 fishermen lost livelihood assets. Water supply and roads have also been destroyed.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said most of those affected require food, emergency shelter and non-food items -- water, sanitation and hygiene -- health services, and protection monitoring.

The storm affected about 180,000 people including fishermen, pastoralists, farmers, traders, including vulnerable groups such as refugees and internally displaced persons.

Climate change, agriculture and food security scientist John Recha, based in Kenya’s capital of Nairobi, said human-caused climate change is to blame for the storm that hit Somalia.

Gati hit the driest part of Somalia which receives less than 100 millimeters (4 inches) of rain annually, drenching the region with more than 200 millimeters (8 inches) of water in just a few days, estimated around 2 years of rainfall.
