Death toll at 35 in Mexico fireworks explosion

MEXICO CITY (AA) – The death toll from a chain of explosions at a famous fireworks market reached 35 on Thursday, officials said.

According to authorities, 36 of the injured are being treated at different hospitals. Four victims are listed in serious condition.

Three children with serious burns were airlifted to a children’s hospital in the U.S. state of Texas late Wednesday.

After visiting victims at a hospital in Mexico state, President Enrique Peña Nieto said his administration is dedicated to rebuilding the market.

“We are committed to support the artisans, the 300 tenants of that market so that they can restart next year their normal activities,” he said.

Forensic teams are investigating the San Pablito fireworks market in Tultepec, just outside of Mexico City, after it was rocked Tuesday as patrons were grabbing up fireworks for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays – a tradition in many Latin American countries.

Authorities said 30,000 workers have lost their livelihoods.

A cause for the explosion has not yet been found.

The death toll could still rise as cadaver dogs continue to search for possible victims.

The country’s attorney general opened an investigation to identify the cause of the blast, but authorities said 100 tons of fireworks detonated in a chain of six explosions.

A video posted on social media showed explosions, fire and heavy smoke coming from the market. Explosions could be heard in the background.
