KHARTOUM, SUDA (AA) – The death toll from tribal clashes in Sudan’s troubled region of Darfur rose to 83, with injuries reaching 160, the Central Committee of Sudanese Doctors (CCSD) said on Sunday.

In a statement, the committee said medical teams are working on evacuating the wounded people, adding some of them are army soldiers.

“The situation is relatively calm since 12 PM on Sunday, but [it is] still unpredictable and we urge authorities to facilitate the movement of medical teams and help in the evacuation of the injured,” the statement said.

Eyewitnesses in Geneina, the capital of West Darfur state, feared that the casualties are expected to rise as the situation is still tense.

They pointed out that sporadic clashes are still ongoing around Kerending Camp for internally displaced persons, located on the outskirt of the city.

Darfur Bar Association (DPA) said in a press release that clashes between Massalit and Arab groups over personal disputes have been exploited by unknown militias to turn it into large scale clashes over the past two days.

The authorities of West Darfur state have declared a 24-hours curfew in the state.
