Death toll in Brazil from cyclone rises to 13

Authorities say that at least 20 people are missing and 3,700 were evacuated

BOGOTA (AA) - The death toll from a cyclone that ripped through southern Brazil rose to 13 on Sunday, with at least 20 people still missing.

The Governor of Rio Grande do Sul state, Eduardo Leite, said in a statement that the severe cyclone had affected 40 towns, causing flooding and landslides.

Authorities also announced that 3,700 people had been evacuated.

Officials said that two ministers were sent to the region by the order of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and search and rescue efforts were continuing.

Many flights were canceled due to floods and landslides and highways and streets were closed to traffic.

Some towns are still without electricity due to damage to power lines.

Rio Grande do Sul state borders Argentina and Uruguay, which decided to take precautionary measures due to the cyclone.
