Death toll rises to 2 after blaze on Greece-Italy ferry

So far 279 passengers rescued from ferry which caught fire near island of Corfu in Ionian Sea last week

ATHENS (AA) – The death toll from a ship that caught fire while heading from Greece to Italy rose to two on Wednesday, according to Greek media.

Fire crews recovered the body of a man from the garage section of the ferry, the official AMNA news agency reported.

No information was provided about the man’s identity.

So far, 279 passengers have been rescued from the ferry which has been towed to the port of Corfu, an island off Greece’s northwest coast.

On Friday, the Italian-flagged Euroferry Olympia set off from Igoumenitsa, western Greece, to the Italian port of Brindisi, a trip of some nine hours.

The fire erupted near the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea, with its cause is yet to be known.

At least 23 out of 27 Turkish citizens, including 23 truck drivers and four tourists on the ferry, were brought to Turkiye.
