LEFKOSA, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (AA) - A documentary film titled “The Road to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” was premiered Monday in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ (TRNC) capital Lefkosa.

Highlighting Turkish Cypriots' freedom struggle against violence and massacres on the island, it was directed by Gorkem Ozok and filmed in partnership with Bahcesehir Cyprus University, Turkiye's Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), the BAU Civilization Studies Center and Bahcesehir University's Civilization Studies Center.

Among those attending the premiere were Turkish Cypriot President Ersin Tatar, Turkish Parliament Speaker Mustafa Sentop, TRNC Parliament Speaker Zorlu Tore, YTB head Abdullah Eren, the Rector of Bahcesehir Cyprus University, Sirin Karadeniz, and the Turkish ambassador to Northern Cyprus, Ali Murat Basceri.

Speaking at the event, Tatar said: "We are inseparable parts of a great and strong nation. Turkish Cypriots are very grateful to Türkiye," referring to the importance of protecting the TRNC on the basis of sovereign equality.

Additionally, visiting the TRNC for the 39th anniversary of its foundation, Sentop underlined that the Turkish Cypriots' struggle is not over. It is for equality and justice and has been going on for more than half a century.

Cyprus has been mired in a decades-long dispute between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots despite a series of diplomatic efforts by the UN to achieve a comprehensive settlement.

Ethnic attacks starting in the early 1960s forced Turkish Cypriots to withdraw into enclaves for their safety.

In 1974, a Greek Cypriot coup aimed at Greece’s annexation of the island led to Türkiye’s military intervention as a guarantor power to protect Turkish Cypriots from persecution and violence. As a result, the TRNC was founded in 1983.

It has seen an on-and-off peace process in recent years, including a failed 2017 initiative in Switzerland under the auspices of guarantor countries Türkiye, Greece and the UK.

The Greek Cypriot administration was admitted to the European Union in 2004, the same year that Greek Cypriots single-handedly blocked a UN plan to end the longstanding dispute.
