KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - The armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo said Tuesday that they have killed 15 members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group in Irumu territory of Ituri province.
According to Lieutenant Anthony Mutsinzi, a security officer in Ituri, news about the killing of the rebels has been confirmed by the military governor of Ituri province, Lieut. Gen. Johnny Luboya N’Kashama.
“Our army has today neutralized 15 ADF rebels in a battle that took place in Irumu territory. The army also captured three rebels and several guns. We lost seven soldiers during the battle,” said Mutsinzi.
The ADF originated in western Uganda in the 1990s with the intention of overthrowing the government led by President Yoweri Museveni.
The Ugandan army managed to crush the rebels and they fled to eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, from where they have been attacking villages, killing innocent people and looting property.
Recently, the army in the Democratic Republic of Congo has increased its operations meant to eliminate ADF rebels from the eastern part of the country.
