Dismissal of pro-Kabila Premier Ilunkamba ends coalition government after months of power struggle

By James Tasamba

KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) - Lawmakers in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday voted out Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba, an ally of former President Joseph Kabila.

A majority of 333 legislators attended the debate in the National Assembly, seeking to approve a motion of censure against the government.

The move comes on the heels of President Felix Tshisekedi’s decision to end a power-sharing agreement with the pro-Kabila camp, following months of political tensions.

Ilunga Ilunkamba had earlier, on his office’s website, described the censure motion as “no more than a political maneuver with no basis, flouting the requirements of the state of law.”

Under the constitution, the prime minister will step down within 24 hours after the censure motion.

The dismissal of the prime minister is the latest episode in a power struggle the sub-Saharan Africa's biggest nation has been witnessing for months. The power politics pitched Tshisekedi against former President Kabila’s loyalists. Kabila ruled the DRC for 18 years.

Tshisekedi agreed to a power-sharing deal with the pro-Kabila camp, which enjoyed a majority in the 500-seat National Assembly, after taking office in January 2019.

Tshisekedi on Dec. 6 announced that he was putting an end to the coalition.
