DR Congo music star upset over Paris concert ban

Paris police ban Werrason's planned concert citing security concerns

By James Tasamba

KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) - Congolese musician Werrason has expressed frustration after police in the French capital Paris banned his concert that had been scheduled to take place on Saturday.

The police banned the concert citing security concerns, saying it posed a threat to public order, according to an order released on Tuesday.

Werrason’s gig at Zenith Arena could ignite tensions between different political factions of the Congolese diaspora in France, the police said.

But in a statement on Wednesday, Werrason, whose real name is Noel Ngiama Makanda, said while he respected the “partisan position” the reasons given by police “are clearly debatable.”

He also said the decision was taken without informing the organizers who had widely advertised the show for almost a year.

“God has never been corrupted and it is He alone, God, who will judge us. I forgive those who took pride in the cancellation of this concert,” he added.

In a Twitter post on Sept. 15, Werrrason said all tickets for the planned concert were already sold out.

He thanked his management and fans who had “shown their love by buying the tickets,” and said the tickets can be refunded at the points of sale.

According to police, Werrason is viewed as close to Congo’s President FelixTshisekedi, as well as his predecessor Joseph Kabila.

In 2011, the musician was compelled to cancel two concerts in Paris due to threats of disturbances, police said.

Werrason tried to join politics when in the 2018 elections he unsuccessfully sought a parliamentary seat on the ticket of Kabila’s Common Front for Congo (FCC).

Previously, violence was reported on the sidelines of another Congolese Latin singer Fally Ipupa in France in February 2020.
