YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AA) – The prime minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has resigned following a no-confidence vote in Parliament, the presidency announced on Friday
Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba handed in his resignation to President Felix Tshisekedi.
On Wednesday, Ilunga was ousted in a parliamentary vote of no-confidence.
Ilunga, an ally of former President Joseph Kabila, was the head of the coalition government.
It followed President Tshisekedi’s decision to end a power-sharing agreement with supporters of Kabila after months of tensions between the two camps.
Last month, the lower house of the DRC Parliament voted out its speaker who is also close to Kabila.
Tshisekedi came to power in January 2019 and signed a secret coalition agreement with Kabila, who kept the majority in parliament.
Recent political developments in the DRC have raised concerns from the UN, which has warned about the potential economic and security impact of the crisis.
