Draft resolution in UN to call for probe into Israeli violations

Draft resolution prepared by Pakistan on behalf of Organization of Islamic Cooperation

By Ahmed Asmar

ANKARA (AA) - A draft resolution is set to be presented at the UN Human Rights Council session to establish an inquiry commission to probe alleged violations by Israeli forces in the Palestinian occupied territories.

The draft resolution was prepared by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for the 13th special session of the UN body.

It calls for a probe into "all alleged violations of international humanitarian law and all alleged violations and abuses of international human rights law leading up to and since 13 April 2021."

Israel ignored similar commissions of inquiry following its offensives on Gaza in 2008 and 2014.

Palestinians launched protests across the occupied territories in April against Israeli attacks and restrictions on Palestinians in East Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and an Israeli court’s decision to evict 12 Palestinian families from their homes in favor of Israeli settlers.

The tension moved to Gaza on May 10, leading to a military confrontation between Israeli forces and Palestinian resistance groups where Israeli warplanes caused an unprecedented scale of destruction in the Palestinian homes and infrastructure.

On Friday, an Egyptian-brokered cease-fire between Palestinian resistance groups and Israel came into effect, putting an end to 11 days of the worst cycle of fighting in years.

At least 254 Palestinians were killed, including 66 children and 39 women, and more than 1,900 others injured in Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, according to Palestinian medics. At least 31 Palestinians were also killed in Israeli attacks in the occupied West Bank.

Thirteen Israelis were also killed by Palestinian rocket fire from the Gaza Strip.
