Travel agencies agree to revive industry hit hard by COVID-19 pandemic

By James Tasamba

KIGALI, Rwanda (AA) - Tourism bodies in the East African Community (EAC) announced on Wednesday to cooperate in the development of business and leisure travel in the bloc as part of efforts to revive the tourism sector that has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The understanding was reached between the Kenya Association of Travel Agents, Rwanda Development Board, Rwanda Chamber of Tourism and the East African Tourism Platform to improve the region's competitiveness as a tourism destination.

The EAC is an intergovernmental organization comprising six countries: Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda. The region has extraordinary landscapes and wildlife.

The partners resolved to collaborate in addressing challenges faced by the region’s travel industry, explore solutions and initiatives that can help transform businesses in the sector, while marketing the region’s tourism offerings to new audiences, according to a statement.

The parties hoped to drive visitors to the countries’ attractions through joint marketing activities, organizing familiarization trips and educational webinars, which would enhance opportunities for private sector actors in the travel industry.

Clare Akamanzi, chief executive of Rwanda Development Board, expressed optimism that the cooperation would increase tourism revenues and create more jobs within the sector.

“The collaboration will allow for greater sharing of ideas, resources, and expertise to create safe travel experiences that meet the needs of travelers,” said Agnes Mucuha, chief executive of Kenya Association of Travel Agents.
