East Europe, Central Asia see rising COVID-19 numbers

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan (AA) - More coronavirus cases and deaths were reported Monday in countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

Belarus recorded 933 more confirmed cases of COVID-10, bringing the total to 23,906.

The number of recoveries in the country reached 6,531 and the death toll hit 135.

The number of cases in Kazakhstan rose by 22 to 5,160, said the country's Health Ministry.

The death toll increased to 32 while 2,074 people have recovered.

The number of cases in Tajikistan totals 661, while the death toll rose to 21. The country’s first coronavirus case was reported on April 29.

The number of cases in Uzbekistan rose by 29 to 2,482, while the death toll stands at 10.

The country has carried out 390,000 tests and 40,000 are under treatment and quarantine.

Officials in Azerbaijan reported 70 new cases for a total of 2,589.

The number of recoveries reached 1,680, with the death toll at 32, according to the Health Ministry.

Georgia's case numbers rose to 638 and recoveries stand at 317. The country’s death toll rose by one in the past 24 hours to 11.

In Moldova, the number of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,995 with 68 additional infections in the last 24 hours, including nine healthcare staff.

So far, 175 people have died and 1,980 have recovered.

After originating in Wuhan, China last December, COVID-19 has spread to at least 187 countries and regions. Europe and the US are currently the worst-hit regions.

The pandemic has killed over 284,800 people worldwide, with total infections more than 4.15 million, while recoveries have surpassed 1.43 million, according to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University of the US.
