KAMPALA, Uganda (AA) - The Red Cross is trying to reunite over 800 children with their families after they were separated in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) due to clashes between security forces and M23 rebels, an official said on Saturday.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Uganda Red Cross Protection Manager Abel Nuwamanya said they were looking after 700 children who lost contact with their parents due to clashes in eastern DRC.

Over 100 children are in the Central African nation are under the supervision of the Red Cross in that country, he added.

Nuwamanya said: "We have 700 children aged between five and 17 years at the Nyakabade refugee transit camp. We are trying to trace their parents."

In a statement on Friday, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was concerned that over 800 children had lost contact with their parents in the wake of violent clashes in the Rutshuru Territory.

Nuwamanya said that apart from food, accommodation, and health care, they were also providing psychosocial services to the affected children.

Since March 28, 2022, clashes between the armed forces and rebels forced a large number of people to move within the DRC and neighboring Uganda. According to the Red Cross, over 30,000 people have fled to Uganda in the past few weeks.

Pamela Ongoma, the head of the ICRC's Restoring Family Links program in the DRC, said the international and local Red Cross organizations had also set up free telephone services for displaced people separated from their loved ones.
