Egypt, Greece call for holding elections in Libya

By Ibrahim al-Khazen

ISTANBUL (AA) – The foreign ministers of Egypt and Greece held talks in Cairo on Sunday to discuss ways of boosting their bilateral relations.

According to Egypt’s state news agency MENA, the two top diplomats exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.

“Egypt’s relations with Greece have become strategic in the full sense of the word,” Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry told a joint press conference.

He said his talks with his Greek counterpart Nikos Dendias took up bilateral cooperation in many fields, including energy.

The Egyptian minister said Cairo and Athens agree on the importance of holding elections in Libya at the earliest possible time.

Dendias, for his part, termed Egypt as “more than a strategic friend” to Greece.

On Monday, Türkiye and Libya signed a series of preliminary economic agreements that included potential energy exploration in maritime areas.

Oil-rich Libya has been in turmoil since 2011, when longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi was ousted after four decades in power.
