Egypt's Sisi offers support to Sudan

President conveys Egypt’s full support for country’s security, stability in phone call with de facto head of state

CAIRO (AA) – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi conveyed his support for Sudan in a phone call Tuesday with the head of the country’s transitional military council.

In a statement, a spokesman for Sisi said the president also affirmed “Egypt’s full support for the security and stability of Sudan” in his conversation with Lt. Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan.

He also highlighted the importance of the will and choices of the Sudanese people in shaping the country’s future.

Earlier Tuesday, the transitional military council announced the dismissal of Mohamed Hamid Suleiman, the head of Sudan’s state-run radio and television agency.

Last Friday, Defense Minister Awad Ibn Auf, the head of the transitional military council, stepped down and named Burhan as his successor. The council also announced sweeping changes to the army’s leadership.

The Sudanese army ousted Bashir last week after months of protests against his 30-year rule. The council was established shortly afterward to run the nation’s affairs for a two-year transitional period.
