‘Energy crisis’ chosen the ‘ugliest word of the year’ in Austria

‘Energy crisis’ was chosen because resulting price increases are lowering standard of living for many people

VIENNA (AA) - "Energy crisis" was chosen the "ugliest word of the year" in Austria, in a vote by a jury of experts headed by Rudolf Muhr of the Society for Austrian German (GSOD).

According to the jury, it was chosen because the constant reference to the shortage of raw materials glosses over the uncontrollably high profits of energy companies.

At the same time as the "ugliest word of the year", the jury also chose the "Word of the Year." The choice fell on "inflation."

The choice of words was characterized less by original expressions, but rather by topics that move the Austrians, as the jury announced.

The price increases due to the energy crisis are a new and unfamiliar phenomenon for most Austrians, massively lowering the standard of living of many people, the jury added.
