England beats Spain 2-1 in UEFA Women's EURO 2022 quarterfinals

ANKARA (AA) - England beat Spain 2-1 in the UEFA Women's EURO 2022 quarterfinal match Wednesday.

After a goalless first half, Esther Gonzalez of Spain opened the score in the 54th minute at Brighton & Hove Community Stadium in England.

Ella Toone gave English fans hope as she scored a late equalizer in the 84th minute.

Georgia Stanway's stunner in the 96th minute carried England to the semis in extra time as the match ended 2-1.

On July 26, England will take on the winner of the Sweden-Belgium match in the semifinals.

Germany will play against Austria on Thursday, Sweden will take on Belgium on Friday and France will face the Netherlands on Saturday in other quarterfinal matches of the tournament.

Founded in 1982, the UEFA European Women's Championship is the main competition in women's association football between national teams of the UEFA confederation and held every four years.

The Netherlands are the reigning champions, while Germany is the most successful team with eight titles in the organization.
