EU leaders summit kicks off in Brussels

BRUSSELS (AA) - EU leaders summit on Sunday began in Brussels where they are discussing the possible candidates for the top positions in the 28-nation bloc.

Leaders of the 28 EU countries will elect the European Council president, nominate a candidate for the president of the European Commission, appoint the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and decide on the president of the European Central Bank.

It will not be easy to determine a new EU Commission president, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

British Prime Minister Theresa May stressed that the relations between 27 EU countries and Britain will continue after the Brexit.

French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted that the four candidates nominated by the leaders must include two women.

Referring to candidacy of the Frans Timmermans, Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki defended that Timmermans is a candidate who deeply divides Europe.

He also claimed that Timmermans does not understand Central Europe.
