EU: No-deal Brexit would cause 'significant' disruption

EU Commission says EU has taken a 'long series' of measures to prepare for no-deal Brexit, though it is not preferred

ANKARA (AA) - A no-deal Brexit would cause disruptions for both the public and businesses and would carry a "significant" economic impact, warned the European Union on Monday.

Furthermore, in a no-deal scenario, there would be no transition period, EU Commission Deputy Chief Spokesperson Natasha Bertaud told a press briefing.

"In a no-deal scenario... there would be no transition period as would have been provided in the withdrawal agreement and this will obviously cause significant disruption both for citizens and for businesses and it would have a significant economic impact," she said.

Bertaud said the EU has taken a "long series" of measures to be prepared for a no-deal Brexit, even if they do not prefer the no-deal scenario.

In case of a no-deal Brexit, the freedom of movement which allows EU citizens to live and work freely in the U.K. will end on Oct. 31, reported the BBC on Monday, basing its story on U.K. government sources.

The United Kingdom is set to leave the EU on Oct. 31.
