EU Parliament in heated debate over Brexit

Emergency session at European Parliament prompts angry exchanges between EU leaders and eurosceptics over the Brexit

LONDON (AA) – A debate at the European Parliament over the Brexit prompted resentful exchanges between EU leaders and eurosceptic politicians in Brussels on Tuesday.

Speaking during the emergency session at the parliament, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said he was “sad” over the Brexit vote but that the EU should respect “British democracy”.

Eurosceptic UKIP leader Nigel Farage, who played a large role in the Leave campaign during the EU referendum, also attended the session.

“I’m really surprised that you are here. You were fighting for the exit, the British people voted in favour of the exit, so why are you here?” Juncker told Farage.

Farage was later booed and laughed at by the other MEP’s while he was addressing the European Parliament.

“What I’d like to see is a grown-up and sensible attitude to how we negotiate a different relationship,” Farage said.

“I know that virtually none of you have never done a proper job in your lives, or worked in business, or worked in trade, or indeed ever created a job,” he added.

“You as a political project are in denial. You’re in denial that your currency is failing,” Farage said.

France's National Front leader Marine Le Pen also delivered a speech at the parliament's emergency session where she hailed the U.K.’s decision to leave the bloc.

Le Pen, who has declared herself to be “Madame Frexit,” said she was “committed to pursuing the path of liberty" for her country.

"Put away those sulky faces, put away those angry looks and rejoice in the free and great emancipation, this is the end to their contribution to the EU," Penn told MEPs at the parliament.

The special parliamentary session came as U.K.'s Prime Minister David Cameron arrived in Brussels on Tuesday to meet European Union leaders for the first time since Britain decided to leave the EU in a historic vote.

Cameron will have a dinner with the other 27 EU heads of government in Brussels.
