EU unemployment falls to 6.8% in Aug

ANKARA (AA) - Unemployment in the EU fell to 6.8% in August, the bloc's statistical office announced on Thursday.

The figure was down from 6.9% in July and from 7.7% in August 2020, Eurostat said.

The number of people unemployed slipped by 224,000 month-on-month in 27-member bloc, it noted.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate reached 7.5% in the euro area, down from 7.6% a month earlier and 8.6% in the same month last year.

The eurozone/euro area, or EA19, represents member states that use the single currency -- euro -- while the EU27 includes all member countries of the bloc.

The unemployment rate for women was 7.2%, and was 6.5% for men last month.

Some 2.83 million unemployed young people under 25 years old were jobless in the EU, bringing youth unemployment to 16.2% in August.
