Eurasia continues to suffer rising coronavirus numbers

NUR-SULTAN, Kazakhstan (AA) - Cases of the novel coronavirus and fatalities linked to the disease continued to rise across Eurasia on Friday.

- Kazakhstan

In the Central Asian country of Kazakhstan, new cases rose by 1,726 to reach a total of 54,747.

Recoveries increased to 31,815, while the death toll in the country reached 264, the Health Ministry said.

The country had announced it would start implementing 14-day quarantine procedures as of July 5.

- Ukraine

Health Minister Maksym Stepanov announced 819 more virus cases over the past 24 hours, raising the overall count to 52,043, including 3,749 children and 7,213 health workers.

As many as 18 more fatalities pushed the death toll to 1,345, while recoveries climbed to 24,800, with 1,016 additions.

Due to the pandemic worsening in the country, quarantine measures were extended until July 31.

- Armenia

Virus cases in Armenia increased to 30,903, as 557 more people contracted COVID-19 over the past day, according to Health Ministry data.

Eleven more people died of the virus, raising the toll to 546.

A total of 131,216 tests have been performed in the country, while 18,709 patients have recovered and the treatment of 11,471 continues.

- Kyrgyzstan

In Kyrgyzstan, 511 more people tested positive for COVID-19, bringing the overall tally to 9,358, including 3,134 recoveries.

With six more deaths, officials announced that the countrywide toll had reached 122 people.

Healthcare professionals have carried out 2,672 coronavirus tests over the past 24 hours.

- Uzbekistan

In Uzbekistan, 276 more people contracted the virus, raising the tally to 11,723.

Three more fatalities brought the toll to 52, while 205 more recoveries over the past 24 hours raised the total to 7,287.

The Health Ministry said 4,384 people were currently receiving treatment.

Medical staff have conducted 1.2 million coronavirus tests, while 70,000 people remain under surveillance.

- Georgia

Five new COVID-19 cases were found in Georgia on Friday, bringing the overall count to 1,004.

Fifteen virus patients have died, while 846 have recovered so far.

Around 5,000 people have been quarantined.

Georgia decided to re-open its borders to five EU nations, Germany, France, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Nationals of these five countries will only be allowed to enter the country via direct flights.

- Global situation

Across the world, COVID-19 has claimed over 555,500 lives in 188 countries and regions since emerging in China last December.

Over 12.29 million cases have been reported worldwide, with the US, Brazil, India and Russia currently the worst-hit countries, according to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University.

The data shows more than half of all patients worldwide -- over 6.76 million -- have recovered so far.
