Ex-Tunisia president hails parliament's move to revoke Saied’s measures

President Kais Saied dissolves suspended parliament

By Yousra Ounass
TUNIS, Tunisia (AA) – Former Tunisian President Mohamed Moncef Marzouki on Wednesday hailed the revocation of incumbent President Kais Saied’s “exceptional measures” by the parliament.
Earlier Wednesday, 124 lawmakers met online and voted to revoke the “exceptional measures” taken by Saied on July 25, 2021.
In a Facebook post, Marzouki described the revoking of Saied’s measures as a “great day for democracy and disastrous to the coup.”
"This day is the beginning of the end, which is impeachment and trial," he said, in reference to the dismissal of the Tunisian leader.
Marzouki called for rebuilding the country’s institutions “to serve the citizens” and taking “lessons from all the mistakes that enabled a person like (president) Saied” to deceive the public.
Earlier Wednesday, Saied dissolved the suspended parliament, hours after lawmakers held a session to revoke his measures.
Tunisia has been in the throes of a deep political crisis since July 25 when Saied dismissed the government, suspended parliament, and assumed executive authority, in a move decried by opponents as a “coup.”
Tunisia has been seen as the only country that succeeded in carrying out a democratic transition among Arab countries which witnessed popular revolutions toppling ruling regimes, including Egypt, Libya, and Yemen.
