Fasting on Ashura Day

Fasting on Ashura Day

This year the 9th and 10th of Muharram 1437, will fall on the 22nd and 23rd of October, 2015 (Thursday and Friday), according to the calender of Makkah.

Ibn `Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: “I never saw Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of `Ashura', and this month, meaning Ramadan.” (Al-Bukhari, Hadith 1867).

In another hadith we are told that fasting the day of `Ashura' expiates the sins of the previous year as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Fasting the day of `Ashura' (is of great merits), I hope that Allah will accept it as an expiation for (the sins committed in) the previous year” (Muslim).

Ibn`Abbas also quoted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as saying, “If I live next year, I shall also fast on the 9th day.” (Musnad Ahmad ibnHanbal, hadith 2002).

The days are getting shorter now. I hope everyone takes advantage of this easy opportunity to wipe out our previous year's sins. May Allah accept it from us inshAllah.

On another note Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (26th, 27th, and 28th of Octoberber, 2015) are the 13th, 14th, and 15th of the month of Muharram 1437. If you can, fast those days as well.

The Messenger of Allaah sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said: ‘Shall I not tell you of something that will take away the evil of the heart? Fasting three days of each month.’ (an-Nisaa’i 2/2386).
