Flood damages century-old water mill in northern Turkey

Historical water mill becomes useless after flooding in Black Sea province of Kastamonu

By Ozgur Alantor

KASTAMONU, Turkey (AA) – A water mill, which has been in service for a century in Turkey's Black Sea province of Kastamonu, was damaged in the heavy flooding last month.

After the downpour in the Bozkurt district on Aug. 11, the Ezine River went off its shores and flooded many workplaces and houses, while some buildings were destroyed and casualties recorded in the region.

Cemal Inal, who is running the water mill, told Anadolu Agency that the heavy shower dislocated the millstone while the wooden waterwheel stuck in the muddle.

Inal said it is the oldest water mill, which he operates since 2013, in the Bozkurt area.

"There are no other water mills in the district center. People used to come from other districts and villages to grind their products such as corn and wheat," he said.

He added that the flood also swept the products the people left in the water mill warehouse.
