Footage shows brutal coup airstrike in Turkish capital

Dramatic video shows moment protesters were caught up in Ankara bombing raid

ANKARA (AA) – Footage obtained by Anadolu Agency shows the moment Turkish anti-coup protesters were caught up in a bomb attack launched from the air.

The 27-second clip shows civilian protesters gathered in the Bestepe district of Ankara on Saturday, hours after the deadly coup attempt launched on Friday night.

Bestepe is also home to Turkey’s presidential palace.

Civilians can be seen milling around, some with Turkish flags, as gunfire can be heard in the background.

The sound of a warplane overhead gets louder and suddenly a huge explosion is seen, sending the civilian cameraman falling to the ground.

It is not clear from the footage if any deaths or injuries took place.

Turkey’s failed coup saw rogue elements of the military try to overthrow the country's democratically elected government.

The coup saw jets bomb key points in the capital, including the Turkish parliament and the presidential palace.

Tanks were also on the streets of Istanbul and Ankara, announcing that the army had seized control of the country.

Soldiers took control of state broadcaster TRT and the General Staff headquarters in Ankara as troops seized the Bosphorus and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges linking Asia and Europe in Istanbul.

When the TURKSAT satellite operator stopped broadcasts by TRT television after a military statement was read out on air, coup leaders struck the company’s buildings in Ankara.

Thousands of civilians took to the streets to shout pro-democracy and anti-coup slogans, many clambering on tanks or lying in the road to block their path.

At least 240 people were martyred and over a thousand are still being treated in hospital.
