ANKARA (AA) - Turkish football club Medipol Basaksehir parted ways with its manager Okan Buruk on Friday.

In a statement, Basaksehir said that both parties; the club and Turkish manager Buruk mutually agreed to part company.

A former Galatasaray and Inter Milan midfielder, Buruk had managed Basaksehir since the 2019-20 season to lead the Istanbul club to its first-ever Super Lig championship in 2020.

Basaksehir thanked Buruk and his staff for their efforts to win the Turkish league last season and wished him the best in his career.

The 47-year-old won the Turkish Cup with Akhisarspor in the 2017-18 season.

In Buruk era, Basaksehir qualified for the 2020-21 UEFA Champions League group stage.

But the Istanbul team have been eliminated in the group phase in December that they faced French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain, Germany's RB Leipzig and English club Manchester United.

This week Basaksehir lost to Trabzonspor 2-1 in the 2020 Turkish Super Cup in Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium.

Basaksehir are experiencing a turbulent season in the Super Lig. They have 24 points in 20 weeks to come 15th in standings led by city rivals Besiktas, who rack up 44 points.
