Turkish sports minister says Super Lig broadcaster to pay 103 million Turkish liras ($15 million) for clubs

By Can Erozden

ANKARA (AA) - Turkish top-flight football campaign Super Lig clubs will be paid twice by the broadcaster so that their economies will be eased amid pandemic, the Turkish youth and sports minister said on Friday.

"After our talks with Super Lig broadcaster [beIN Sports from Qatar], football clubs will be paid today, also next week," Mehmet Muharrem Kasapoglu said.

Kasapoglu joined the Anadolu Agency Editors' Desk on Friday.

He stated that the broadcast company will pay 103 million Turkish liras ($15 million) for the clubs on Friday.

The economies of football clubs were disrupted by the coronavirus as it forced Turkish football to halt competitions in March.

Super Lig resumed last week after a three-month pandemic break as the resumption also brought strict measures during competitions.

Separately Kasapoglu said that foreigners also stayed in Turkish dormitories -- including Trabzonspor's Norwegian star Alexander Sorloth -- during the pandemic as Turkey hosts 77,000 people from 97 nations.

One of these foreigners, Sorloth completed the mandatory 14-day coronavirus quarantine in Turkey in May, praising Turkish responses to the virus "effective."

He underwent the quarantine at a student dormitory on April 22.
