UEFA slaps Celtic with 10,000-euro fine after fans flew Palestinian flags during match against Israel's Hapoel Be'er Sheva

By Bayram Altug

GENEVA (AA) – UEFA fined Scottish club Celtic on Thursday for a fan display of Palestinian flags during the Glasgow side’s Champions League play-off victory against Hapoel Be’er Sheva on Aug. 17 at Celtic Park.

UEFA said in a statement it imposed a fine of 10,000 euros ($11,217) on the Scottish champions.

Celtic fans displayed the flags before and during the match, prompting UEFA to launch an investigation.

Separately, UEFA’s disciplinary committee ordered Polish club Legia Warsaw to play their next Champions League home game in an empty stadium.

This followed Legia fans' behavior during the side’s Champions League Group F defeat to Germany's Borussia Dortmund on Sept. 14 in Poland.

The Polish club was sanctioned after fans lit torches during the match and threw material onto the pitch. The club was also criticized for poor organization and was slapped with an 80,000-euro ($89,643) fine.

Legia Warsaw will play their upcoming Champions League home match against Real Madrid behind closed doors.
