Football: Emery era in Arsenal ends over poor results

ANKARA (AA) - English Premier League club Arsenal dismissed Spanish manager Unai Emery on Friday amid poor results.

"We announce today that the decision has been taken to part company with our head coach Unai Emery and his coaching team," Arsenal said on their website.

"The decision has been taken due to results and performances not being at the level required," the London club said.

Arsenal stated that they asked their ex-midfielder Freddie Ljungberg from Sweden to manage the first team as an "interim head coach".

The Gunners are now looking for a new manager.

Emery, 48, previously managed Valencia, Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Paris Saint-Germain.

He led Sevilla to win the UEFA Europa League titles in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Emery was the French champion with Paris Saint-Germain in 2018.

After his success in France, Arsenal appointed him manager in May 2018.

This season Emery was under fire by Arsenal fans as the Gunners were unable to get a win for the last five Premier League matches since October.

Arsenal won against Bournemouth 1-0 at their home ground Emirates Stadium on Oct. 6. This was the London club's last win in the league.

Following this victory, Arsenal were in a turbulence.

They firstly lost to Sheffield United 1-0, drew against Crystal Palace 2-2 at home, got 1-1 draw against Wolves in London, lost to Leicester City 2-0 and managed a 2-2 draw against Southampton at Emirates Stadium.

Thursday's home loss against Eintracht Frankfurt by 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League was the last nail on the coffin for Emery.

Arsenal parted ways with Emery even though they are still leading the Group F in Europa League.

Eintracht Frankfurt are only one point behind Arsenal, which have 10 points in this group.
