NYON, Switzerland (AA) - Galatasaray President Mustafa Cengiz said on Thursday the Turkish football club would not be banned from European competitions in the next season.

Turkey's Galatasaray club met UEFA officials in Nyon, Switzerland, to defend the stance that its economic situation remains in accordance with financial fair play rules.

Following a two-hour meeting with UEFA officials, Cengiz told Anadolu Agency: "There is no obstacle for us to participate in the European competitions.

"We will announce the developments after we complete our commitments. The biggest good news we can tell our fans that there is no obstacle."

About the date of official announcement of the UEFA decision on Galatasaray, Cengiz said: "We are expecting that the decision will be announced soon."

Regarding possible punishments by the UEFA on Turkish club, he said: "There will be some punishments for Galatasaray about fiscal discipline."

Cengiz said Galatasaray would sign a four-year agreement with UEFA about the its financial situation.

A decision by European football's governing body on the financial fair play situation of Istanbul's Galatasaray will "likely" be announced in June.

Galatasaray have already missed the European competition during the 2016-17 season for violating financial fair play rules.

The Turkish club is on the verge of becoming champions in Turkey's Spor Toto Super Lig for the 21st time. Galatasaray now only need a draw against Goztepe next week to claim the title.
