ANKARA (AA) – Former England and Tottenham Hotspur forward Jimmy Greaves was admitted to hospital late on Tuesday with an unspecified illness.
"We can confirm that our record goalscorer Jimmy Greaves is currently being treated in hospital. We are in touch with his family and will provide further updates in due course," the English Premier league club said in a statement.
Greaves, 80, netted 266 goals in 379 appearances for Tottenham to become the London club's all-time top scorer.
He started his career with London rivals Chelsea in 1957 and joined Italian giants AC Milan in 1960.
His stint in Italy proved short as Greaves returned to England a year later to join Tottenham.
Greaves won two FA Cups and two English Super Cups during his nine seasons with Spurs, before signing for West Ham United.
He was also part of the England squad that won the 1966 FIFA World Cup, the country’s sole international title to date.
Greaves, who also suffered a stroke in 2015, scored 44 goals in 58 games for England.
