Football: Trabzonspor beat Fenerbahce, end 8-year spell

Trabzonspor topple Fenerbahce 2-1 in Sunday's league clash

ANKARA (AA) - Trabzonspor won against Fenerbahce 2-1 in Turkish top tier Spor Toto Super Lig on Sunday night breaking an eight-year spell.

In the 50th minute, Czech left back Filip Novak's close range header missed Fenerbahce goalkeeper Harun Tekin.

In the 75th minute of the match, the home team doubled the lead as Argentinian central midfielder Jose Sosa smashed from outside the box.

Seven minutes later Fenerbahce narrowed the gap to one as Swiss forward Michael Frey made a low shot toward the goal to miss Trabzonspor goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir.

Frey's late goal kept Fenerbahce's hopes alive for a possible equalizer.

But Trabzonspor defended their goal and won the match 2-1.

Trabzonspor last beat Fenerbahce in August 2010.

After Sunday's loss, Fenerbahce are now very close to the relegation zone.

Fenerbahce are in the 15th spot with 13 points. Their opponents Trabzonspor went up to the seventh spot in standings, they have 19 points.



- Konyaspor stun Galatasaray over disputed penalty

On Friday night, Super Lig winners Galatasaray were stunned by Atiker Konyaspor at their home ground Turk Telekom Stadium.

Galatasaray were in trouble until the 69th minute when Konyaspor defender Ugur Demirok sent the ball into his own net.

Near the end of the game, the referee awarded visitors Atiker Konyaspor a disputed penalty after Galatasaray defender Serdar Aziz's sliding tackle.

Losing his temper after penalty decision of the referee, Aziz threw the ball at him and was sent off for his aggressive behavior.

Konyaspor right back Nejc Skubic converted the penalty and the visitors grasped the 1-1 draw in Istanbul.

Galatasaray went down to the third place in standings with 24 points.

On Saturday the other title contenders Besiktas bagged a comfortable 4-1 win against MKE Ankaragucu in an away match.

Besiktas' Serbian attacking midfielder Adem Ljajic scored the opener in the first half.

Turkish forward of Besiktas Mustafa Pektemek doubled the gap in the 27th minute. Near the end of the first half Besiktas made it three as youngster Guven Yalcin found the net.

Home team Ankaragucu forward Mostapha El Kabir narrowed the gap to two in the 86th minute but Besiktas replied with midfielder Oguzhan Ozyakup two minutes later.

Besiktas climbed to the fourth spot with 21 points in the league table.

On Monday, league leaders Medipol Basaksehir will be hosted by Goztepe in an away match as the Super Lig's matchday 13 will end.

The match to be held in western province of Izmir will kick off at 8 p.m. local time (1700GMT).
