ANKARA (AA) - Gordon Banks, England's 1966 FIFA World Cup winning goalkeeper, has died at the age of 81.

"We’re deeply saddened to hear that Gordon Banks, our World Cup-winning goalkeeper, has passed away. Our thoughts are with Gordon’s friends, family and supporters at this difficult time," the English football team said in a tweet.

England manager Gareth Southgate offered condolences over Banks' death.

"I am deeply saddened to hear of Gordon’s passing," Southgate said on the England Football Association website.

"On behalf of everyone connected with England, I send my condolences to his wife Ursula, his family and friends," Southgate added.

"Gordon was a fantastic goalkeeper, without doubt one of the best England has ever had," Banks’ team-mate Sir Bobby Charlton remarked, adding that Gordon will be missed.

Six-time FIFA goalkeeper of the year, Banks had 73 international appearances for England -- also known as the Three Lions -- as he helped his country win the 1966 World Cup trophy.
