ANKARA (AA) - Former Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar was moved out of an intensive care unit Tuesday after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage in July.

"I'm happy to share that I'm no longer in the intensive care unit. However, I'm still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!" van der Sar said on Twitter.

The former Ajax Amsterdam and Manchester United goalkeeper thanked those who sent "supportive messages" while he was in hospital.

The ex-Ajax CEO got his photo taken in a hospital room with his wife Annemarie as both were smiling.

Van der Sar, 52, suffered a cerebral hemorrhage on July 7 while he was on vacation in Croatia and was rushed to the hospital. He was later transferred to a Dutch hospital.

After retiring from football in 2011, van der Sar, who had 130 caps for the Netherlands, joined the board at Ajax before becoming chief executive in 2016. He resigned from the position in May.

Van der Sar, who was widely considered one of the world’s best goalkeepers for the majority of his career, won two UEFA Champions League titles: the first one with Ajax in 1995, and the other with Manchester United in 2008.

He also won domestic titles with Ajax and Manchester United.

In addition, van der Sar played for Italy's Juventus and England's Fulham.
