Former Zambian attorney general arrested in corruption case involving over $17.9M

LUSAKA, Zambia (AA) - Zambia's Anti-Corruption Commission arrested the country's former Attorney General Likando Kalaluka on Tuesday in connection with a corruption case involving $17.9 million paid by the government for the supply of 22,500 health kits between 2019 and 2021.

"Kalaluka has been charged with one count of conspiracy to defraud the state. Between January 1, 2019 and January 31, 2021, Kalaluka, aged 45… conspired to defraud the government in a manner in which Honeybee Pharmacy participated in the tender to supply and deliver 50,000 health center kits and was consequently awarded a contract for the supply and delivery of 22,500 kits valued at $17.9 million," said the commission's Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, Timothy Moono, in a statement in the capital Lusaka.

Moono said Kalaluka had been released on bond and was scheduled to appear before court soon.

Kalaluka is the third high-profile public official to be arrested in the case after the commission last week arrested and jointly charged former Health Minister Chitalu Chilufya and former Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary for Administration Kakulubelwa Mulalelo in the same matter.

Also arrested were three Honeybee Pharmacy directors for the same offence.

All of the suspects were released on bond and are scheduled for court appearances.
