MADRID (AA) - France will not take irregular migrants rescued in the Mediterranean Sea any longer, Italian local media claimed Friday citing officials.
“France has changed its mind about taking a share of the 47 asylum seekers that recently disembarked from the Sea-Watch search-and-rescue ship in Sicily,” Italian news agency ANSA reported citing Interior Ministry officials.
France "will only take people who need protection, not economic migrants, and it added that it will support Italy in requesting more effective repatriations to some African countries, starting with Senegal," according to ANSA.
The report came a day after France recalled ambassador to Italy for consultation in wake of Italian government's meeting with Yellow Vest protestors this week.
