France records over 2,800 excess deaths in this year's summer heatwave

In June 1-Sep. 15, authorities record 10,420 deaths for all causes combined, with 6.1% excess death rate

ANKARA (AA) - France recorded more than 2,800 preventable deaths during the heatwaves of last summer -- the second-hottest since 1900, the country's government health agency said on Monday.

Authorities recorded a total of 2,816 excess deaths during the three heat waves of 2022 for all causes combined, namely COVID-19 and climate change, said the statement by Sante Publique France (SPF), adding that this indicated an excessive death rate of 16.7%.

The agency noted that France faced three heat waves in 2022: In June 14-22, July 9-27, and July 29-Aug. 14.

Between June 1 and Sep. 15, authorities recorded 10,420 deaths for all causes combined, with a 6.1% of excessive death rate.

The SPF indicated that at the national level, the excess mortality rate during the 2022 heatwaves was the highest since 2003.

Previously in August, France's weather bureau Meteo France said in an analysis that the average temperature in June-August was 22.67 C (72.8 F) compared to 23.1 C in the summer of 2003.
