French finance minister to wear warm turtleneck cardigans this winter to ‘save energy’

PARIS (AA) - French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire on Tuesday vowed to ditch his formal tie and shirt attire in favor of warm turtleneck cardigans in a bid to reduce heating to conserve energy.

“You will no longer see me with a tie but with a turtleneck. And I think it will be very good, it will allow us to save energy, to show sobriety," the minister said on France Inter radio. He later shared a photo of himself on Twitter dressed in a black turtleneck.

He said that his ministry located in Paris will “not put on the heating until the temperature drops below 19C.”

Maire said he hopes to set an example for the French who have been instructed by the government to save energy and avoid unnecessary wastage.

France, like the rest of Europe, is facing an energy crisis with inflated prices of electricity, gas, and fuel.

The majority of the households, businesses, and municipal authorities in the country have joined the “energy sobriety” measures and decided to turn off lights close to midnight in stores, and public buildings and reduce indoor heating.
