By Hidayah al-Saidi

GAZA CITY, Palestine (AA) – Gaza’s fishermen's union will suspend all fishing activity in the Gaza Strip on Thursday to protest the murder on Wednesday evening of a Palestinian fisherman by gunfire from an as-yet-unidentified source.

"The fishermen’s union has decided to halt all fishing activity off Gaza’s coast from Thursday morning to Friday morning to protest the murder of fisherman Mustafa Abu Odeh," union head Nizar Ayyash told Anadolu Agency.

In a statement released Wednesday evening, Gaza’s Health Ministry said that Abu Odeh, 32, had been killed while plying his trade off Gaza’s coast near the southern city of Rafah.

The ministry did not provide any further details.

Some activists on social media, meanwhile, are alleging that Abu Odeh was killed by gunfire emanating from Egyptian territorial waters.

Roughly 50,000 Palestinians in blockaded Gaza earn their living through fishing, according to the fishermen’s union.
