ANKARA (AA) - Germany's annual consumer inflation rate was confirmed at an 8-month low of 7.2% in April, according to final data released on Wednesday.

The figure was down from 7.4% in March, Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) data showed.

"The rate of inflation has therefore slowed for the second month in a row but remains at a high level," Destatis head Ruth Brand said, blaming elevated food prices.

The cost of energy surged 6.8% year-on-year in April, following a marked slowdown in March (up 3.5%).

April saw an above-average rise in food prices with 17.2% from a year earlier, slowing from a 22.3% hike in March.

Excluding energy and food prices, the inflation came in at 5.8% in the month.

On a monthly basis, Germany's Consumer Prices Index increased 0.4% in April.
