Ghana sees record spike in coronavirus cases

ANKARA (AA) - Coronavirus daily infections in Ghana have jumped five folds, raising concerns about a possible second wave of the virus in the West African country, the country’s president said.

The daily virus cases in the country have surged from an average of 25 infections per day to an average of 130 per day over the past two weeks.

In a televised speech late Sunday, President Nana Akufo-Addo urged the people to observe virus preventive measures such as use of masks, handwashing, use of sanitizers, and social distancing protocols.

“In recent weeks, however, we have observed a gradual change in the trajectory of the virus, with an increase in active cases from” the 398 cases recorded three weeks ago, to 1,139 active cases, as of Friday, Akufo-Addo said.

“These figures, obviously, give cause for concern, in view of what is happening in Europe and America, following the outbreak of a second wave of infections that is engulfing so many other countries,” he added.

The West African country has recorded a total of 49,202 coronavirus cases, with 320 deaths and 47,726 recoveries, according to the country's health officials.

A great majority of the 320 deaths resulted from those with existing health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, chronic liver disease and asthma, according to Akufo-Addo.

He said those who do not comply with COVID-19 protocols will face severe sanctions.

The president also urged political leaders to set example by wearing mask during the intensified political activities and rallies ahead of general elections slated for Dec. 7, 2020.
