Grand Prix of Figure Skating final in Japan postponed due to coronavirus pandemic

International skating body says Dec. 9 - 12 final in Osaka cannot be held as planned

ANKARA (AA) - The final of the 2021 Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Japan has been postponed Thursday because of nationwide coronavirus restrictions.

"The ISU (International Skating Union) was informed by the Japan Skating Federation (JSF) that the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final 2021, scheduled to take place from December 9 - 12, 2021 in Osaka (JPN) cannot be held as planned," the international skating body said in a statement.

It said travel restrictions amid the pandemic, quarantine requirements and safety concerns in Japan challenged the country.

The JSF and the local organizing committee did their best but cannot organize the final as planned.

"The ISU regrets that the hosting of the event is no longer possible in Osaka in December. The ISU will evaluate a possible postponement to hold the Event at the end of the season and will take a decision as soon as possible," it said and thanked the JSF for their efforts.

The 2020 final in Beijing was postponed and then canceled because of COVID-19.
